Marijuana and Pregnancy

Everyone knows that women have to be careful about everything they consume when they are pregnant because everything will have some sort of affect on the unborn baby. With that being said, marijuana might not be as bad for a pregnant mom or her baby as people may think. A study done by Pediatrics yielded some results that may be surprising to many.

Comparing infants who were heavily exposed and not exposed at all to cannabis showed that the offspring of heavy-marijuana using mothers had significantly higher scores on:

  • orientation
  • autonomic stability
  • reflexes
  • habituation to auditory and tactile stimuli, and to animate auditory stimuli
  • higher degree of alertness
  • capacity for consolability
  • less irritability
  • had fewer startles and tremors
  • better physiological stability at one month
  • required less examiner facilitation to reach an organized state
  • more socially responsive
  • the quality of their alertness was higher
  • their motor and autonomic systems were more robust
  • they had better self-regulation
  • they were more rewarding for caregivers than the neonates of non-using mothers at one month of age

Now with all that being said, I am not a mother or female and I don’t have any kids of my own. I am not advocating smoking marijuana while pregnant but you can’t argue with results and facts. Until someone shows me evidence from a reputable source that says otherwise, I am going to go ahead and say that if you are stressed out and pregnant, a few hits of the J is not going to kill anyone. Just be careful because combining pregnancy and the munchies could result in you buying whole isles of food from the super market. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Shout outs to Jack Herer for putting me up on this.

I want to hear what you guys think about this topic.  It’s a little controversial and I definitely think more research is needed but it is definitely worth finding out because I am sure there are many moms out there smoking weed (among other things) while pregnant already.

Here is where I may be seen as a hypocrite, but I don't believe a pregnant woman should toke anymore than I think she should drink. I don't dispute any of the above findings, and I am most certainly not comparing the effects of pot to alcohol, but as a child born to a heavy pot smoker, I can tell you that I have suffered for it. My lungs were not fully developed when I was born and now suffer with asthma. There are positives, but I don't think all the negatives have been studied, and because of that reason, I think staying completely sober while pregnant is important. When you are pregnant, your body is no longer yours, and your sole function is to take care of yourself so your child can be healthy. That is why there are pre-natal vitamins, and emphasis on organic food and nutrition.

"When you are pregnant, your body is no longer yours, and your sole function is to take care of yourself so your child can be healthy."

I am not saying that you shouldn't be very concerned and protective of the fetus, but talks like this make me go rigid. The mother is no longer a human? Only a container? The mother no longer has rights? Its this sort of backwards thinking that anti-choice people thrive on. Your body is always your body and no one has to tell you what to do with it.

as a female, a mother and a smoker—– I smoked everyday of my pregnancy.I couldn’t eat unless i smoked. I talked to my OB about it and without say i COULD blow, she let me know that mornings would be the best time. I was preggers back in 2002, here in Bmore there was a drought–a serious drought. I called my son a “blueberry baby”. There was no regular at all, only blueberry.

I went into labor (horrible, horrible back pain) and the hospital sent me home. They told me to “come back when u feel the head”. Seriously, so i went home, pulled out many, many micro-mini braids, cried, cursed and cried some more. Then my homeboy came tapping at my door. He rolled up to nice blunts of blue and we smoked. After the first one we played to games of NBA LIVE, i swear i forgot i was in labor. After the second blunt i got some rest.

A few hours later, i went to the hospital with my grandma, had her act a southern ni**ga so they would hook the monitors up to my back. 45 minutes later i pushed out a 8lb 2oz son. 2 hours after that i went outside and smoked a much deserved L.

My son has never shown any deficiencies and is actually extremely advanced for his 7 years. He is physically strong and has been boxing for over a year. No breathing problems that those people warn about.

If weed was legal, we wouldnt even be having this conversation

the only problem i can see is lack of oxygen, as that's never good for the fetus no matter what is being smoked – but that's easily solveable, there's tons of ways to ingest weed without smoking it. i would like to see more studies on this, it's a really cool topic and it's interesting that there are actually some benefits.

I fail to see how your mother smoking while you were in the womb would affect your lungs. Your bloodstreams are connected, not your lungs. Plenty of kids are born with asthma, you're in no position to place the blame on your mother's marijuana usage.

Your post is exaggerated. Make sure to read the source before posting.

Oh and this study I just found seems like they did much more research. 1,360 pregnant women involved in the study vs 44 pregnant women…
